As things have been changing in my career, I find myself updating my LinkedIn profile much more than my paper resume. In fact, since starting a new job in January, I've really only cared about LinkedIn and a few other online profiles. I haven't touched my Word-based resume at all. LinkedIn is just better, meaning I can integrate things like Web site links and recommendations much more simply than on paper. And it's also more beneficial, meaning I can connect with co-workers and colleagues without actually sending my profile to anyone. I manage this single, structured source of resume and reputation data and others come to check it out. LinkedIn is the new resume, and a better one at that.
But what I've also realized is that updating one's LinkedIn, Emurse or MySpace page is really much more than updating an online resume. It's personal brand management. Whereas a paper resume represents a moment in time via a one-off submission to a company, an online profile can stay current over time, and in real time. My resume in an employer's filing cabinet or Web site is inherently outdated. My profile on LinkedIn is up to date with every visit, regardless of when I e-mail the link or connect with a new contact.
So what companies accept an online profile in place of a resume submission? That's where there is work to do.
